 xbox live help needed dns failed

xbox live help needed dns failed

hi, i'm trying to connect to xbox live by connecting the xbox 360 to my laptop via an ethernet cable and the laptop is connected a wireless network. When i try a test connection it says : network adapter - wired, ip address - confirmed, dns - failed
i have enabled ICS on my laptop and have different dns settings like dns ip n gatway n subnet mask from my laptop and PC with the router and modem connected. I'm sorta jst gessin wt t put in to the dns address on the xbox and the auto dns address it detects fails

could someone please tell me what i'm doing wrong or what the problem be as im new to the xbox,

Are you running Windows XP or Vista ? Where you enable ICS on your laptop, if you go to the advanced settings, where you can specifically set the services that can go through, do you see added entries called "Xbox followed by an IP address and a port #" ? Try disabling the Windows Firewall. That's what worked for me. Leave the Xbox set to auto-detect both the IP and DNS

i'm running on xp, i've enabled ics on the wireless network settings not lan, i've disabled my windows firewall and have tried my xbox on auto detect, although i havent got xbox on the services that go through so ill try that,
how could i find out the port no. and the ip to let the xbox service to go through ? thanks for your time and help.

If you go to Xbox.com theres a page about getting ICS to work with XP. It tells you the ports to open if you have to. I think it's like 3700 UDP but I'm not positive.

thanks ill try that

apparently port 3077 (the Xbox port) is open by default so i'm at a dead end as i don't want to buy a wifi adapter

but ill try and put that port on the service list

Hey guys, i've been searching for a while and came across this post.

I'm in the same situation.

Wireless connection (DLINK ROUTER) -> Laptop runnig XP ->hardwired to xbox360

Test Fails at DNS check.


So confused as to what to do...I've read that I need a CAT5 crossover cable (im using
as read off cable: CAT5e Patch Cable EIA/TIA-586A 4UT23AWG)

Ports are opened in your router through your PC. You'll need to login to your router and forward (open) the ports to your console's IP.

However, without knowing what router you have we can't provide specific directions on how to do it.
