Why are mods illegal?

I was just wondering why it's so taboo to talk about or mod your xbox. I mean, you did pay for it, you own it, why can't you do what you want with it? I haven't modded mine, for fear of screwing something up, but I've watched a few friends do it. I just don't see what the big deal is, other than voiding the warranty. I mean, if you buy a PC, is it illegal to mod that by putting in a different drive or bigger hard drive? By opening it up, you also void the warranty on your PC. I'm just not seeing how these are not similar circumstances. Maybe I'm just dumb :P

I could see if you were modding to cheat on Live or something, but I heard Microsoft will just ban you, so I guess thats why I don't understand the big deal with mods. You're not hurting anyone..but yourself if you break something. hehe.

If someone could give me a legitimate reason other than "Microsoft says.." I'd be a little happier I guess.

My point was just that usually anything you buy...you have the right to do whatever you want to it. So it's illegal to mod your xbox, but legal to smash it with a hammer? or throw it down your stairs? See where I'm coming from?

I just posted this because I see some people mention mods and they get run off the board because I guess they think everyones gonna freak out on them.

Yes, I'm aware that somewhere on the Xbox it says not to mod it, but that's not what I'm asking. I'm asking why, if you pay for this product in full, Microsoft still has a say in what you do with it, even if it harms no one.

Re: Why are mods illegal?

Its not exactly illegal to mod it... its just the programs and software to do it is illegal but being forbidden to talk about anything like this here is against the rulez

Re: Why are mods illegal?

when I first came here I started a thread very similar to yours but it got closed down rather quickly. I do agree with you 100 % though.

Re: Why are mods illegal?

Modding your personal hardware is not illegal under law. Its using a modified bios to get around copyright protection that is illegal. As for why we forbid it here, as XBS is friends with XBOX.com, we've had to make it against the rules to discuss modding as XBOX do not allow discussion on such activities.

Such acts as modding your box to enhance performance or by changing any hardware within the box will void your warranty and is frowned upon by XBOX thus frowed upon by XBS.

Re: Why are mods illegal?

Most of the bios that are used by mod chips are based on M$ own bios, and since they didn't pay for the rights to that those Bios are illegal.

Re: Why are mods illegal?

Mods are Illegal because they modify your BIOS and make it so you can copy games onto your harddrive, play the dvds without the expensive remote, and therefore cheat companies out of the money. Modding is not taboo and all out evil, it is just not to be discussed postivitly on xboxsolution

Re: Why are mods illegal?

Okay..I guess this message will disappear then I didn't want to discuss how to mod an Xbox, just why it was illegal, that's why I thought this thread might be fair game. I know a lot of people wonder the same things I do.
