help no video

My son has an old xbox that now will only play music cd's. It will not play games or dvd's. What could be the problem? I would like to try and fix it before we buy a new one.

First make sure and test the AV cable could be a bad video cable. Or it could be the DVD lens there really is no way to check that unless you have the knowledge. I would just test everything you can if all else fails take it to a shop that works on them. It's cheaper than sending it in but ask how much. Hope this helps?

I suppose I left out some information. The setup menu does appear. You can do everything like set up the clock, change any of the settings, ect. but games will not come up ( the light flashes green then comes on steady ) and movies will not play (no menu). You can play music cd's and controll them from the menu and from the remote controller.

Sounds like the DVD lens if you can play music but no video then you will have to get the lens checked.

If the light stays on green and steady, the system should be OK. Make sure the A/V cable is plugged all the way in, try to reseat it also. Usually if there is a problem the light will flash red.
