Perfect Dark was the culprit of many a wasted week for me on the N64, with an excellent array of weapons and innovative features - coupled with fantastic multiplayer. We've been teased since Microsoft purchased Rare, from a cel-shaded Joanna Dark to the total silence afterwards. Naturally I was ecstatic when Microsoft announced that the next incarnation of the game would be released on the Xbox 360. Amazing visuals, 50-person multiplayer and we've only seen it running at 30% power. I can't wait.
Let's get the obvious thing out of the way, Perfect Dark Zero (PD0) is going to make your eyes bleed - in a good way. So far Microsoft have only shown PD0 on ‘alpha' Xbox 360 units, which are apparently only 30% of the machine's full power. Even on the ‘360-lite', PD0 looks amazing. Character models are crisp and incredibly detailed, with little indication of any defects such as aliasing. Everything is bump and normal mapped, with the introduction of parallax textures. These textures allow developers to create depth and normal mapping, perfect reflection, lighting and shadow over vast surfaces - and only using one or two polygons.
