May 16, 2005 - Bethesda Software unveiled the latest Elderscroll game for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, dubbed Elderscrolls IV: Oblivion. Following up on Bethesda's fantastic Morrowind (which also garnered many Game of the Year nods), Oblivion focuses on the classic, open-ended gameplay that has made the Elderscroll series one of the most popular RPG titles made in the West.
From the short video, Oblivion retains the same type of gameplay that the previous games possessed, most importantly the dual first- and third-perspectives for the combat while in dungeons or out in the towns.
During the demo, one thing was definitely clear to us; the environments looked amazing, showcasing all of the Xbox 360's great powers. All of the areas that were shown were both detailed and expansive, right down to the blades of grass on the field. In addition, there were many scenes that really showed the X360's ability to handle fire and lighting sources. As far as character design goes, it was pretty much the standard for the Elderscroll series; a dark, villanous bad guy, a lot of zombies and skeletons, and an unseen avatar that kicks an unholy amount of butt.
Unfortunately the trailer didn't show off a lot of the game, unlike Dead or Alive 4. It remains to be seen what exactly is new to the seris and if the game will support Xbox Live in any way -- although odds are that it will in some form. We'll have more information on the game when E3 officially opens in two days.
