I wanted to post this as it seems it is a hot topic and I did say it would happen. I have heard from several people that in September a new Blue Ray DVD player is going to be launched for the Xbox 360 as well as new content on the marketplace. Pricing has not been leaked but it seems there was a lot more going on at CES when the death of HD format was announced. It also seems top people at MS like Shane are making bold statements saying that Xbox will provide the most currrent format?
What do you guys think is this for real or just one of those internet rumors?
I really think it will happen and probably was planned in case HD didn't work out.

Who's to say really, MS know that if there is a demand for it, then they will most likely make one. Being the most current format doesn't say much, your can get firmware online to make it so, MS needs to upgrade their sound codecs for this, to current HD codec like 6.1 or 7.1

In the end it would make sense, and while they may be doing it to keep it secret, they have denied this the 3 times rumors surfaced about this happening. Then again, rumors usually appear for a reason.

At this point I really don't see a reason why Ms would bother coming out with a blu ray add on. The 360 is now in it's fourth year which is mid to late life, so it's too late for an add on like this imop. If you want high def movies just download them off of the marketplace. there really is no need for a blu ray add on. If they do indeed do this though it would be a nice if microsoft would kindly give consumers who purchased the hd dvd drive some sort of rebate if they decide to purchase one.

It used to be 5 years and then a new console would be announced. Sony claims a ten year plan for the PS3. As far as downloads the biggest issue is the size and storage. I think they will come out with a player and some rebate for those who own a HD-player from them now.

Posts: 2,585 | Re: Xbox to unveil Blue Ray Player and Content in Sept? yeah that WOULD be nice, but MS could not predict who was going to win the Format war, and I still have a ton Of HD movies to find, I just picked up the matrix collection and shooter off some one on Craig's list. But Nick you make a good point, If ms is already at work on THE next system, then why would someone buy a blu-ray add on and not wait another year or 2? WELL I'll tell ya, because the blu ray add on would be more affordable then any other player out there.

And the only reason why I have not discounted this from happeneing and that may make them do this reagrdless of how long the console has been out, is that it has been claimed that since BluRay won the battle, and the PS3 is (or was) the cheapest player + gaming console in one, it has given Sony an advantage.
Whether this is really true or not, I do not know... it would make sense. I mean, if someone is already on the way to buy a BluRay player, and the PS3 offers that plus much more for less... then it's a no brainer.
The PS3 is regarded as an awesome A/V device. Great upscale player, great BluRay player (lots of future features due to firmware upgrades and hard drive). For example, BD-Live was recently added to the PS3 via firmware, this something not all the older BD players can do because of a lack of HDD space and/or enough memory.

Could you imagine all the bad press if they introduce a new console again? Time will see but I really think if Blue Ray is the option it will be an add-on player.

Who knows, if they do bring out the add on, and I'm still not using my PS3 very much when they do, I might just trade it or sell it off and get one of those instead.

I thought about that also, But I'm going to hold on to my PS3, it has really grown on me and I like what they have planned this Fall. Plus I like the idea of transferring a blu ray movie on to my psp.
