According to a CNN Money report, Sony will not release its PSP handheld outside Japan until after the turn of the year, . It will instead arrive some time before the end of Sony's current fiscal year in March 2005.
The system was originally planned for simultaneous worldwide release by the end of calendar 2004, and it will still make that release window in Japan. However, North America and Europe will have to wait until a few months after the holiday season.
"The reason we pushed it out here is we wanted to be sure there's a reasonable amount of software titles to launch with hardware," SCE spokesperson Teresa Weaver explained.
It's been rumored that Sony has had difficulty nailing down the final specifications of the PSP hardware, although SCE has offered no comment on the record regarding details of the hardware's development
