Looks like Kojima Jr. isn't the only one disappointed with Metal Gear Solid. The latest issue of the UK's Edge magazine contains an interview with Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima, who expresses disappointment with the latest game in the series, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. It isn't so much the gameplay itself as it is the graphics.
"Game-wise, it's pretty close to the original vision: you sneak into the battlefield and can choose whether to do a stealth game or interfere with the battle more directly. But the graphic, side things like motion-blending and the size of the map, totally was not accomplished to my original vision - to my satisfaction.
Now Kojima is a well-known perfectionist, but it is a bit disturbing to see him voice his dissatisfaction with what is supposed to be the masterpiece of the franchise. So where does he lay the blame for not fully realizing his vision?
"When we first showed the game engine at TGS, the staff were really proud and happy. PS3 was a dream machine, y'know, and we were going to work on this and that - and we had so many ideas. But when we actually started developing the game, we realized there were a lot of restrictions and so it turned out how you see it today. The original vision was to go ten steps further, the reality was just one step, which isn't to say we didn't progress.
So there was certainly progress made, but not enough progress...or more specifically, not enough power for progress. Apparently the team overestimated what the PlayStation 3 was capable of.
I remember saying three years ago that we wanted to create something revolutionary, but in reality we couldn't really do that because of the CPU. We're using the Cell engine to its limit., actually. Please don't get me wrong, I'm not criticizing the PS3 machine, it's just that we weren't really aware of what the full-spec PS3 offered - we were creating something we couldn't entirely see.
Well there you have it, straight from the man himself. Metal Gear Solid 4 is not revolutionary. Personally I think the man is being a bit hard on himself, but that's what great minds do.

That doesn't sound good for the PS3.

Posts: 2,585 | Re: Kojima Disappointed With Metal Gear Solid 4 I bought metal gear tonight and I am impressed. the graphics are outstanding, the game play is fluid and the story is typical Metal gear but this seems a bit darker. The controls took me some time to get used to but once I did, it became a lot easier to get past enemy's. This is still a stealth game and reminds me of splinter cell in that you don't ever rush in to any situation with guns blazing. I haven't tried online play yet..I'm waiting on some of you to get it first. This is The first game that I have seen that will sell systems I think. I know that the Metal gear PS3's have sold out around these parts but the line for the midnight launch for our local Gamestop was only 25 people.

Posts: 2,585 | Re: Kojima Disappointed With Metal Gear Solid 4 After playing this for a couple of Days, it gets better and better..there are so may little details that they did in this game that makes it rock. There is an ipod snake carries that he can listen to while playing the game that keeps his stress level down, and one cool thing konami did was include a pod cast and they intend on updating the podcast even now and then. Now thats cool. Snake has a suit that will take on the characteristics of his surrounding, enabling him to blend in...you just hold still for a second against any background, and his suit will change to match it, that helps a lot. I also like being able to customize the weapons I pick up. There seems to be a lot of fart jokes in the game...I mean like the runs...must be some bad food going around in this little city. I have to say that those of you that have a PS3, this is a must have game along with COD4 and Uncharted.

I really the iPod thing, and the podcast concept is awesome... what sucks is that it cannot be used while using the eye attachment. I mean, I understand not letting you use the eye attachment with the robot (I'm sorry, I forget the names)... but I use the eye attachment A LOT, and this denies me the experience of using the iPod.
I like to feel involved in the story of a game, I think it's one of the most important things in a game... but a couple of the cutscenes have gotten on my nerves. WAY too long... and even worse when you have a super long cutscene, then you gain control of the character for 30 SECONDS only to find yourself watching another cutscene. I think they needed to find a better balance there.
Graphics are awesome, nothing else to say about that.
I guess I also wish I knew a little more about the whole story behind the franchise to understand the background a little more.
I also found the controls not so intuitive at the beginning, but you get used to them after a while.
I thought there was only an initial install, but apparently there are also installs bewteen chapters.... or at least between the first and second one, haven't gone past there.
Very cool how you can see flashbacks during cutscenes by pressing L1 or X, but I wish the icons flashed or were bigger... sometimes I miss them and at the beginning I had no clue what they were.
