Goodbye XBL

If I cancel my XBL subs, will I be able to resurrected it in the future if I want to come back?

I can no longer justify the price of the Subs as I now use the PS3 far more. In fact I have only been online in XBL about four times since I last renewed my Subs in May 2008. I'm loathe to lose my Gamertag and my online friends though, so the decision to let my subs lapse is a difficult one. I've been on XBL since early 2003 but times are hard now and as I go on the PS3 far more nowadays I can't justify the Subs Fee anymore.

Added to this I've only got an original Xbox so I don't think I am getting the full benefit of XBL, such as 360 owners enjoy, anyway. I pay the same as 360 owners. So I think it is sadly time for me to cut my losses and move on.

Eighteen months ago, when I got my PS3 I still planned to get a 360 someday so, then, it was justifiable to me to keep XBL going. But as time has gone on and I have bought game after game for the PS3, the only possible reason for me to get a 360 would be to play Halo 3. Time has passed by and I now realise I don't really care now anymore about Halo 3 so the prospect of me getting that 360 is leaching away. I didn't anticipate this 18 months ago. I thought I would have my 360 by now.

So there you have it. I don't expect the answer to my question will be encouraging. So this maybe my swan song on the Xbox.

Here's to all those guys (and gals) who have given me the 'game of my life' in the past 5 years. Cheers guys. As Spock would say - "Live Long And Prosper"

Re: Goodbye XBL

If and when you get an xbox 360, you can transfer your game tag to the 360 along with your friends list. It does not go away when your subscription runs out. Add me to your PS3 friends list my GT is roughneck1010

Re: Goodbye XBL

Just to be clear, Roughneck is correct. When you let your gold subscription subside, it automatically reverts to a silver (free) subscription. Additionally, there are special weekends where Silver members are allowed to play online. On another note, I do have a PS3 as well as a 360, but I have ended up only using the 360 as their was no real game advantage for me on the PS3 and I like the interface better on the 360 as well as the live experience. I am open minded though, let me know if there is a killer game experience on the PS3 that is good enough to make me retrieve my PS3 from my younger brother's apartment.

Thanks Santus (or is it Daniel).

If you are happy with the 360 then I say stick with it. Now that most games are on all machines (and I mean all machines - even my Mac has more games now) I see no reason why you should change. Unlike you however I don't already own a 360 and my point was that I have no longer any reason to want to go to the extra effort and cost to get one - which I once planned to do. I wasn't trying to make a point about one machine being better than the other although you no doubt realise that. I don't want to start a 'fan boy' punch up, if you get my gist. Lord knows there's been tons of those in forums the Net over.

Whilst on the subject of cancelling subs., mine has been debited from my credit card each year. Using my Xbox to cancel online always quits saying there is 'Technical Difficulties'. Ringing MS is a pain in the **** and so is their Windows Live website. All it says is -

"To cancel your Xbox LIVE membership, please call (800) 4MY-XBOX (469-9269)".

This is fine in the US no doubt, but what about everyone else on this planet? Where I live there are no Alpha characters on our phones, just numbers. There must be another number to dial for UK accounts I assume, but I can't find it. Anyone know where I need to look?

Thank you for taking the trouble to reply to my post. You too, Roughneck. Thanks for the friend invite on PS Online. You are added.

UK has their own number if you go to Xbox.com it should be listed. The US number would not be able to help you anyhow on this.

Re: Goodbye XBL

lol, they all get re-routed to India anyhow. You could also get a hold of your bank Hoof, and explain that you are having trouble getting a hold of XBL to cancel your subscription and just have the bank block XBL from taking any more funds from you bank account.

Thanks for your replies.

I got the phone no. from xbox.com. I can't find any other number on that site.

Looks like I will need to try roughneck's solution.

Try stopping or calling the local Game shop in your town. I only know that the UK has their own service number for live due to people on my friends list telling me that live there. You may also want to look in one of the game boxes or the manual I don't have the number or I would have posted it.

The reason you can't to it from the dash is because it's the old Xbox and a few functions can no longer be done.

Re: Goodbye XBL

In case u haven't got round to canceling ure direct debit with the bank yet - the UK number is 0800 587 1102 and there pretty quick to answer that's if u avoid calling at 5pm and weekends that is... I've had to call um a few times!

P.s - u must have a pretty old phone? don't think I've seen one without alpha characters these days considering the main use for them is to accommodate the 800 XBOX type numbers.

Hey thanks Zrion. Just the job.

Yep, must have got the latest phone around 1987. It was a two tone green Trimphone with a clear plastic ring dialler before BT, who was our provider at the time, changed it for this swanky new Touchphone thingy.

I'll try that number tonight about 8 pm I think
