Halo Campaign - The Maw - Can't cross bridge at end of game

I 've got as far as The Maw in Halo (without cheating, may I add).

It's taken me ages to get this far, but I've finally got stuck.

I've got slightly less than six minutes to grab the overtuned warthog and drive through the obstacle course to escape the Ship before its nuclear engine explodes. It's bloody hard but I find that, if I don't wait when Cortana tells me to stop for the Dropship, I can press on to a gap in a bridge which I think I must leap over to escape destruction.

Trouble is, I can't get up enough speed to jump clear across the gap. I mostly survive the drop into a lower tunnel but don't have enough time left afterwards to get back across the gap to try again. If I continue onward there is another huge pit to die in. So I'm stuck.

Can any Halo fans advise me, pleeeezzzze!!!

I don't think you have to make the gap, unless I am thinking of a different part I have never (and I don't think it is even possible) to make the gap.

Ah, this is the final run, am I correct? What you wanna do is make sure it saves at the start so you can just do it quickly. It will take a while to memorize the paths...when she tells you to slow down for Foe Hammer (The Dropship), dont.

Yeah, you don't have to make the gap. As long as you land onto the lower level your okay. Here's another tip if you pressed for time. When you reach the end of the run where Cortana tells you to get out of the Warthog and make the rest of the journey on foot there is a straightaway to the Longsword fighter. This area is filled full of covenant and Flood, so instead of going straight, go around the barriers that outline the straightaway, and make your way around the skirmish and that leaves you with no enemies between you and the fighter.

The trick is good concentration and don't listen to anything Cortana says. Keep going till you cant go no more and then get out and run like hell.

If when you take the jump, you hear a the music change into tense violin-ish music until you land, and you land on something that doesn't kill you, you should be fine.

Ok mate so let me tell you how I did it which might help you I hope? At the start of that level just after you get out of the lift, you'll be in the short corridor where you'll see Warthogs parked along the left and the right, so go into the 1st warthog on the right. Drive out into the outside and drive as fast as you can working out a route the best way you know how ( which may take several goes as you may well know ). When you get to the bridge where Cortana tells you to stop and wait for that dropship, DON'T BOTHER just drive on, when you get to the big wide muthafukka of a gap, just drive full speed over it and you should land and fall out of the warthog. Don't worry. Now to make sure that you'll make it over the next gap back up as far as you can and then drive fast and then you'll make it. And finally when you do come to within site of that other dropship, stop at the barrells, and run like crazy avoiding the flood and then you'll get the old cutscenes and so on.

This is the bit I need to know, I reckon. I got this far then was actually ending up going back the other way. Not worrying about the huge gap and backing up and running again and so on sounds like the answer.
