Yes, there is a story line, but the game is the most open-ended I have ever played. Check out the strategy(sp) guide, it makes a huge difference. The great thing is that you complete the story-line on your own time. According to the game calendar, 5 years had passed before I "finished" the main quest. However, the countless bandit caves, mines, tombs, ruins, etc that there are in the game, make it a rpg lovers dream. I made it my personal goal to murder every person I could find on the game, including the Almighty Lord Vivec. I used the Ministry of Justice i.e. the huge meteor floating over the city of Vivec to launch my attack on the population...sigh...it was great.
Saying that to say this, as long as you can find someone alive, there is a 98% chance that there will be something to do....sorry if I rambled, I just get so wrapped up in talking about the game...
